Top Five Places for Black Retirees

While a single list can't capture the perfect location for everyone, several cities are frequently highlighted for Black retirees due to their affordability, high quality of life, strong Black communities, and cultural amenities.

Here are five places commonly cited as excellent options for Black retirees:
 
1. New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans offers a rich cultural history with deep ties to the Black community and a vibrant, lively atmosphere.
  • Culture: The city has a strong Black cultural heritage, known for its iconic jazz music, vibrant culinary scene, and festivals.
  • Affordability: The cost of living is relatively low, and Louisiana does not tax Social Security benefits.
  • Community: The city's unique neighborhoods and tight-knit communities provide a strong sense of belonging for residents. 
2. Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta has a long-standing reputation as a "Black mecca," with a thriving and influential Black population. 
  • Community and influence: As a hub for Black culture, business, and political power, Atlanta offers a strong sense of community and visibility for Black residents.
  • Amenities: The city boasts a cosmopolitan lifestyle with diverse dining, shopping, and entertainment options.
  • Affordability: A relatively low cost of living and affordable housing options are available, especially in the suburbs. 
3. Durham, North Carolina
This city, often mentioned with nearby Raleigh, offers a great balance of amenities, affordability, and a strong sense of community. 
  • Affordability: Housing expenses and utility costs are significantly lower than the national average.
  • Senior-friendly: Durham Parks and Recreation offers a wide array of programs specifically designed for mature adults.
  • Community: The area is a hub for the "New Great Migration," attracting many Black Americans to its growing urban centers. 
4. Prince George's County, Maryland
Located in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, this county is the wealthiest majority-Black county in the United States and offers strong Black representation. 
  • Representation: The area is known for having a high level of Black representation in government, education, and business.
  • High quality of life: The county and surrounding "DMV" area (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) provide a high quality of life, with top-tier schools and an excellent food scene.
  • Community: Vibrant Black communities are a defining feature of the area, though some parts can be expensive.
5. Columbia, Missouri
For retirees who prefer a midwestern location, Columbia offers an appealing mix of robust healthcare and a lively social scene. 
  • Healthcare: The city is known for its strong healthcare system, a key consideration for many retirees.
  • Amenities: It has a large number of restaurants and activities, and a decent Black population that supports a lively social life.
  • Livability: Columbia has a strong overall "livability" appeal, making it a comfortable place to settle down.
